How to achieve a major goal in your life

How many of you have dreams for your life?

I think we all have dreams and deep down inside we believe some day we will live our dreams.

My purpose is to inspire you to create and execute a plan to achieve one of your important life goals.  A large part of my life has involved achieving major goals for me, my family and for others.

You can accomplish your dreams. You can be anything you decide you can be.  Henry Ford said "Whether you think you can or you think you can't - you are right". You will become what you decide you can become.  If you want to know what your life will be like in five years, just listen to what your are saying about yourself today.  If you believe you will accomplish your dreams you will be walking, talking, and acting like you have achieved your dreams.

Here are the keys to achieving a goal.  First you must create an exciting goal with reasons that will inspire you to accomplish it.  Write down what you are going to achieve and when you will achieve it.  Then list the reasons why you want to reach the goal.  It is important to have compelling reasons.  These will get you through the difficult times when progress toward your goal is slow or non-existent.  The more compelling your reasons, the more enthusiasm you will have toward achieving your goal.

Belief is next.  You must believe the goal is possible and that you are going to achieve it. To develop a strong belief you must plan the steps necessary to accomplish the goal.  If you aren’t sure of the steps or you know some of the steps but not all; get busy and find out all of the steps and how to accomplish them.  Read books, take classes, listen to audio programs, and go to seminars.  Get into conversations with people who have accomplished a similar goal and listen well.

Many people work hard on the job, but don’t work hard on their plans. In fact most people don’t make plans, but don’t be like them.  A guy told me one time, “if you worked where I work, you would know that there is no time left by the time you get home. You’ve got to take care of the kids, get something to eat, watch a little TV and get to bed.  You can’t sit up half the night planning, and setting goals.”  And this same man can’t pay all of his bills!  He is a hard worker, and he is sincere.  But you’ve got to be better than sincere and work hard: otherwise you’ll end up broke… and embarrassed.  So make up your mind to have enough discipline to be a good planner.  You may have heard the saying, “People who fail to plan are planning to fail.”  You can make the time each day to be a good planner.

Once you have belief in your goal, you must create a vision of you achieving the goal and what your life will be like when you have accomplished it.  It must be a clear vision that excites you.

Figure out what vision will help you generate the feelings of having it now.  As an example, you may be living in an apartment and want very much to own your own  home.  Get busy and develop a vision of the home you wish to own.  Go out and look at homes for sale.  Envision the exact home you want.  Keep revisiting that vision in the days and weeks to come,  That will help you have the enthusiasm to achieve the steps necessary to own that home.

I once read that Winston Churchill gave the shortest commencement speech in modern times.  He was welcomed to the stage and he looked out over the graduating class and he said “never, never, never give up” and then he sat down. You must never give up on reaching your goal.

Discipline is one of the major steps to success.  If there’s one thing to get excited about, it is discipline.  Get excited over your ability to make yourself do the necessary things.  Now, that’s exciting!  What could you do, starting tomorrow, to change everything in your life?  It could be amazing.

The key to discipline is to start with the little things and work up to the big ones.  You can’t handle the big challenges until you practice on the small ones.

In addition to setting goals and making plans and having the discipline to achieve them, you must have an attitude which supports your goals and discipline.  You must think positive thoughts and reject negative thoughts.  One of the reasons people don’t get what they want is they think about the things they don’t want.  They think about their debt, their bad relationships, their bad habits, their negative friends, and bad things that have happened to them.  What you think about will come about.  Reject a negative thought the instant it comes into your mind.

In conclusion, you must create an exciting goal with inspiring reasons.

Then you must believe the goal is possible and believe that you are going to achieve it.

Out of this comes your plan.

Next you must create a vision of you achieving the goal and what your life will be like when you have accomplished it.

Then you will need discipline.

Finally, you must have an attitude which supports your goals and discipline.

Remember what Henry Ford said "Whether you think you can or you think you can't - you are right".
